President's Message
Welcome to this Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick Inc. Our club has been serving the local and international community since 1948 and this year we will celebrate 75 years of service to our community, both local and international.
Rotary promotes the ideal of service through fellowship. Attending our meetings allows members to enjoy the fellowship of other club members, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.
As a Club we support a wide range of projects. As well as having a broad range of local and international community projects, we are particularly focused on the Rotary projects, Australian Rotary Health, Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) together with The Rotary Foundation.
We welcome everyone to come along to any of our meetings in 2023, to join in the fellowship and to learn more about what we do.

Sarah Kearney, Exercise Physiologist, with the Maroubra Mental Health Centre's program 'Keeping the Body in Mind' (KBIM) and is the Exercise Physiology Discipline Lead for South Eastern Local Health District. Sarah will talk to the recent donation of some essential gym equipment by our this club for the Centre's fitness program.
Our last meeting
International Service is one of Rotary's five Avenues of Service and our Club has a proud history in that regard. Our member Peter spoke on opportunities that exist to do good work in this area of service.
Peter has an enormous wealth of knowledge and experience of which Rotary projects is an integral component during his membership with the Rotary Club of Burwood, and often in partnership with Walter Bock, also from the same club, they were involved in many local and international projects.
Projects such as the very successful Community Chest which raised over $1.6 million for the club, much of which was applied toward maintaining the plethora of projects, including all Rotary New Generation, Rotary Health Foundation, the Rotary Foundation, Exchange Students, RAWCS were supported, and others, such as the Junior Citizen of the Year and a School Debating Competition were established as club long-term projects.
Many Rotary International projects were completed in the South Pacific zone, Sri Lanka, Africa and the Philippines, examples included the development of a school in Sri Lanka, which attracted the support of a local Rotary Club and through a partnership were able to expand the building program and facilities, and in the Philippines.
To highlight how Rotary can assist project development, Peter spoke of Gemma Sisia, formerly from Armidale, NSW, now principal of St Jude’s School, Tanzania whose dream was to establish a school to provide educational opportunities where little, or none was previously available to local children.
With support from Armidale, Gosford North, Erina Rotary clubs the school was established, with additional support from clubs, such as Burwood Rotary providing on a regular basis second hand computers, re-circulated from our local schools’ replacement programs.

RYPEN, The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment, is for young people aged 14 to 16 years, and caters for teenagers who have shown qualities and application in everyday life which deserve further development.
RYPEN uses the common bonds of learning, co-operation, and friendship to design activities which facilitate trust and self-esteem. RYPEN seeks to broaden each participant’s horizons culturally, socially, and academically, providing the inner foundations for a strong future.
The Rotary Club of Botany Randwick was pleased to sponsor Oliver, Luke and Omar to a recent RYPEN weekend run by the District 9675 RYPEN Committee.
Our members Paul and Greg drove Oliver and Luke to the Telford Camp in the Royal National Park, just south of Sydney. They were the first to arrive, so everything was being established for the weekend, which was great as the boys had first 'dibs' on their choice of room. Haydn, on his 2nd secondment as a RYPEN Peer Support representing University of Wollongong Rotaract Club showed the boys around the facilities. All the leaders had participated in RYLA earlier in the year. Our third Randwick Boys HS participant, Omar, was driven to the camp by his father.
The boys were excellent candidates - they joined in all the varied activities with enthusiasm and made great connections with other the other participants from all over Southern and South Western Sydney and the Illawarra. Omar had a leading role in the “photo scavenger hunt” as one of the challenges was to obtain a photo with him.
All parents joined the camp for the Sunday BBQ lunch and awards presentation, which concluded the camp activities.
The Rotary Club of Botany Randwick actively supports a wide range of very worthwhile projects locally and internationally.
