President's Message
Welcome to this Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick Inc. Our club has been serving the local and international community since 1948.
Rotary promotes the ideal of service through fellowship. Attending our meetings allows members to enjoy the fellowship of other club members, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.
As a Club we support a wide range of projects. As well as having a broad range of local and international community projects, we are particularly focused on the Rotary projects, Australian Rotary Health, Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) together with The Rotary Foundation.
We welcome everyone to come along to any of our meetings to join in the fellowship and to learn more about what we do.
Guest speaker at our meeting will be Peter Gleeson, a fourth-year Economics student at UNSW. With extensive experience across education, technology, and community engagement, Peter has developed strong skills in public speaking, communication, and policy analysis.
Peter has established a charitable foundation, AMPE Foundation, to help others overcome educational disadvantages. He will tell us about his first project, to set up a resource centre in Bukono County, Uganda, to give back and help those who face educational disadvantages.
As part of the meeting we will also conduct our Annual General Meeting.
As usual we will meet in the upstairs Board Room for our meeting. We will then adjourn to the Club's dining room for dinner and chat. All welcome, especially any visitors.
Our last meeting
Guest speaker at our last meeting was Dr Keith Suter, Managing Director Global Directions think tank. Keith is an economic and social commentator, strategic planner, conference speaker, author and broadcaster.
As a broadcaster, he appears on Australian radio an average of once per day. He is the TV Channel 7 “Sunrise” foreign affairs editor.
Keith discussed the impressive character attributes of Trump love him or hate him. Some of these include:
His success on TV and as an entertainer
Only the second President in history to win again after a defeat at the polls.
How he has tapped in and understands the blue-collar worker fears and aspirations even though has little to do with them.
His strength of character and resilience.
A never give up attitude.
Keith believed that Trump wasn’t a good business person but sold it well. Further, he used his support base to get elected, but no longer needs them, they have served their purpose! The challenge for all will be Trump's unpredictability.
Keith also discussed trade and tariffs on how they can affect Australia, the Ukraine and international affairs including likely peace deal with Russia and the effect on Europe and NATO. He also touched on a nuclear Iran and North Korea.

10 year old Nayline from the island of Santo in Vanuatu is currently undergoing treatment at the Sydney Children's Hospital here in Randwick. As a baby, her family noticed that "things weren't right" and local doctors confirmed that she was born with scoliosis. This condition has gradually worsened as she has grown, and she now has a very defined curvature of her spine.
Nayline was referred for ROMAC's assistance about five years ago, but this was put on hold due to COVID. Fortunately, it is now all systems go, and she and her father Henry arrived in Sydney on 22 October. Since then, she has undergone a series of x-rays, CT scans and MRI to determine the extent of corrective action required. She and her dad will now return home to Santo and return in early February 2025, when she will undergo two major operations at Sydney Children's Hospital.
Whilst in Sydney, they have been staying at Ronald McDonald House, where they have been supported by members of the ROMAC Eastern Region Committee and members of our Club.
The picture shows Nayline with Dad, Henry, her superhero Batman, and Botany Randwick member, Richard. Dr Michael Plaister, who facilitated her acceptance by Sydney Children's Hospital, was masquerading as Batman as it was a dress-up party day for staff at the hospital! Dr Plaister was recently recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow for his support to ROMAC over many years.
The Blue Dragon Foundation in Vietnam is now celebrating its 20th anniversary.
From its initial concept of working with street children, in Hanoi, it has now become a leading agency in Vietnam’s fight against human trafficking. They don’t want to reduce human trafficking. We want to end it. And we believe that’s possible.
The Rotary Club of Randwick was pleased to be part of the start of this great initiative, providing a substantial donation back in 2005 to assist in its work. That support has continued ever since, with annual donations continuing in the years since.
Win a great holiday in Fiji and support the local and international projects of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick.
