President's Message
Welcome to this Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick Inc. Our club has been serving the local and international community since 1948.
Rotary promotes the ideal of service through fellowship. Attending our meetings allows members to enjoy the fellowship of other club members, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.
As a Club we support a wide range of projects. As well as having a broad range of local and international community projects, we are particularly focused on the Rotary projects, Australian Rotary Health, Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) together with The Rotary Foundation.
We welcome everyone to come along to any of our meetings to join in the fellowship and to learn more about what we do.
At our next meeting we will have four High School students come along to tell us about their recent experience at RYPEN.
The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) offers an intensive residential weekend for young people aged approximately 14 to 16 years. They will develop increased motivation, improved life skills, better self-image, pride in themselves and an understanding of setting and achieving goals.
At the same time, participants are interacting with peers from different backgrounds, and different parts of our district, improving their teamwork skills and having fun!! All this done in an informal atmosphere, where questions and debates are encouraged.
Our last meeting
Our guest speaker at our last meeting was Richard Woodburn, club member and Operations Director for ROMAC - Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children.
ROMAC provides major surgery in Australia and New Zealand for children of the Oceania Region, from Timor Leste across to Fiji, who don't have the necessary surgical facilities, or skilled surgeons, in their own country.
To date ROMAC has provided this life saving surgery for 550 children of our Region. 40 of these have been treated at our local Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick, with accommodation provided at Ronald McDonald House.
Recent patients include
Ferise (pictured above in ICU following his surgery) from Vanuatu, with a fractured skull
Lugio from Vanuatu who required open heart surgery
Mourine from the Solomon Islands with a very large benign tumour on her neck. Its removal necessitated very delicate surgery to ensure no damage to her facial nerves. During her lengthy stay in Sydney Mourine also "reconnected" with her education at the Hospital School, returning home qualified to enter High School
Melenaite from Tonga who had a 2.5kg teratoma (mass of tissue and blood vessels) growing on her lower back at birth
Senri from the Solomon Islands who suffered severe burns to both his hands when "playing" with a WW2 mortar bomb
ROMAC has about 30 patients awaiting placement at present and Richard expressed his appreciation for the long term support that has been provided by our Club, for the benefit of these children.

On Saturday 22 June, 10 members of our Club were invited to join a very convivial dinner with about 30 Rotary Community Leaders from across Australia and New Zealand.
They were undergoing a weekend of training at the Stamford Hotel in Mascot and invited us along to their dinner at the Graphic Arts Club, a venue very familiar to us.

June is Rotary Fellowship Month! This is a fitting designation since fellowship is particularly to the forefront with changeovers being very much the priority in June.
Rotary also has Fellowships in many areas, which are based on a friendly association of people who share a common interest, or more broadly as a group of people meeting to pursue a shared interest or aim.
Rotary Fellowships are designated as autonomous, international groups of Rotarians, Rotarian partners, and Rotaractors who join together to:
Share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.)
Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession
Make new friends around the world
Explore new opportunities for service
Have fun and enhance their Rotary experience
