President's Message

The past two weeks have been another busy and rewarding period for our Club, with some wonderful examples of Rotary in action.

One of the highlights was our mock interview program with around 30 Year 10 students from JJ Cahill Memorial High School. It was a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to help students build confidence and prepare for future employment. A huge thank you to Simon and Phil Wicks for their enthusiasm, encouragement and guidance to the students, and to Rudi for organising the day. I would strongly encourage other members to participate next time.

We also achieved another first for our Club with our inaugural Bunnings BBQ at Alexandria. More than 1,000 sausages were cooked and sold during a very successful and profitable day. Thank you to everyone who helped. The funds raised give our Community Service Committee additional resources to support worthwhile projects.

Christine and Marea represented our Club at Tracey’s memorial at Souths Juniors on Friday, where approximately 150 people gathered to pay tribute to a remarkable woman and past Rotarian. Our thoughts remain with Tracey’s family and friends.

Our last meeting was another excellent evening, with Di North as our guest speaker and a number of visiting Rotarians from Rose Bay joining us. Di’s presentation provided a fascinating insight into the breadth of work undertaken by Rotary and Interplast. A number of our own members commented afterwards that they simply had no idea Rotary did so much. It was a great reminder of the impact our organisation has locally, nationally and internationally.

Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute their time and enthusiasm. The last fortnight shows just what can be achieved when we work together.

Next Meeting Wed 14 October

Our guest speaker this week will be Rudi Pastore, Careers Advisor of JJ Cahill High School.   He will be bringing a fellow teacher.  They will bring us up-to-date with the Big Picture Leaning, a relatively new program at  JJ Cahill.

We will also hear brief updates from the Chairs of Club Services, Youth, Vocational, Community, International and the Rotary Foundation.  After the formal part of the meeting, we will adjourn downstairs for dinner, a drink and a convivial chat.

Our last meeting -23 September

At our last meeting we had as our special guest an old friend, Past  District Governor Di North, OAM along to bring us up todate on the great work of Interplast.

Di provided us with an inspiring overview of Interplast, an organization dedicated to transforming lives through surgical interventions in the Pacific region.

It was truly enlightening to learn about the remarkable efforts of Australian plastic surgeons, doctors, and nurses who volunteer their time to travel across the Pacific. Their work in performing surgeries on both young and older individuals to correct cleft palates, remove growths, and repair deformities is nothing short of heroic.

These surgeries significantly improve the quality of life for many, allowing them to lead more normal and fulfilling lives.

Additionally, eight members from Rotary Rose Bay attended to hear about the outcomes of Interplast's initiatives.

The evening was not only informative but also a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and appreciate the profound impact of volunteer medical professionals. It’s inspiring to see how organizations like Interplast and ROMAC, despite their different approaches, work tirelessly to serve those in need. Looking forward to our continued support and learning from such impactful endeavors.

Blue Dragon
What an incredible and inspiring evening with Vi and Kim from Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation (Vietnam) when they attended our meeting on 29 July.
Vi’s story is one of resilience, hope and the life-changing impact of generosity. As a child, Vi was living on the streets of Vietnam when one of Blue Dragon’s very first donations helped provide him with support, safety and opportunity. Today, he has come full circle and now dedicates his life to rescuing children and young people from human trafficking across Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and China.
Hearing firsthand about the lives being transformed through this work was both humbling and inspiring.
The Rotary Club of Botany Randwick was proud to donate another $1,400 to support Blue Dragon’s vital work protecting vulnerable children and fighting human trafficking. We have been proudly supporting their work for nearly 20 years, providing some of the initial seed funding in their very early days helping children on the streets of Hanoi.
A special thank you to Sydney Airport and the many travelers who donate their foreign coins and notes through the airport charity bins. Those small acts of kindness are helping create life-changing opportunities for children and families who need it most.
Together, we are proving that even the smallest contribution can have an extraordinary impact.

The Four Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a non-partisan, non-sectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.

Of the things we think, say or do:
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
