President's Message
Welcome to this Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick Inc. Our club has been serving the local and international community since 1948.
Rotary promotes the ideal of service through fellowship. Attending our meetings allows members to enjoy the fellowship of other club members, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.
As a Club we support a wide range of local and international projects. As well as a broad range of local and international community projects, we are particularly focused on the Rotary projects, Australian Rotary Health, Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) together with The Rotary Foundation.
All are very welcome to any of our meetings in 2023.
During the 2022-23 summer school holidays, Year 12 student Theo spent two weeks surrounded by many highly-regarded scientists and like-minded students exploring the opportunities available to budding scientists post the HSC. The experience was split into two weeks. Week one was online, where participants networked with industry experts and a range of different scientists such as CEO of Lockheed Martin (an Australian Defence contractor), the NSW state recipient of the Australian of the Year Professor Veena Sahajwalla, and UN scientists and board members. Week two saw participants traveling to a variety of labs specialising in computer science, quantum computing, biomedical sciences, and environmental chemistry. Participants also visited universities, a nuclear reactor, spoke with professors, attended lectures, conducted experiments, and attended a range of social events.
We look forward to hearing from Theo about his experiences.
Tara Colman, Club Manager, Eastern Suburbs PCYC will also be attending and will update on the work of the police Citizens Youth Club.
Our last meeting
Our last meeting was a night of fun and frivolity, mixed with some serious competition, as we challenged members of three other Clubs in ten-pin bowling.
The bowling was preceded by a convivial dinner and some warm-up drinks at the adjacent Newmarket Hotel.
The standard of bowling was quite mixed. Whilst many bowls ended up in the gutters, others somehow managed strikes and the odd spare!
Marrickville Club prevailed on the night, taking home the trophy with our Club not far behind. Bridget collected the trophy for the top women's score, so great that we were able to bring home some of the glassware (full of champagne!).

As we start to resume some sort of normality after years of COVID, ROMAC is slowly getting back into the provision of much needed surgeries for children in our Pacific neighbours.
ROMAC recently farewelled baby Melenaite after 9 months of treatment at both The Canberra Hospital and Sydney Children's Hospital at ROMAC. This week we have three more children in Sydney:
Senri, a 13 year old boy from the Solomon Islands being treated at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick for burns suffered when he picked up a World War 2 phosphorus grenade
Isileli, a 9 year old boy from Tonga being treated at The Children's Hospital at Westmead for a respiratory issue, seen in the photo being welcomed at Mascot airport by one of our Club members, Richard, and a member of the Solomon's community.
Ephraim, an 8 year old boy from the Solomon Islands, also being treated at the Children's Hospital at Westmead for vision issues.
Our Club is a strong supporter of ROMAC, both in terms of financial donations and the work of a number of members who both assist the management of the Program and support the families whilst they are undergoing treatment at our local hospital.
Baby Melenaite was born with a large teratoma, a mass of tissue and blood vessels, on her lower back.
Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) arranged for her and her mum Michelle to fly to Canberra, where the 2.5kg tumour was removed. Unfortunately, some remnants remained and she was transferred to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick for further treatment. They have been living at Ronald McDonald House and members of our Club have been supporting them during their stay.
On 2 March Melenaite underwent 5 hours of surgery. Firstly an operation by Urologist Dr Sarah Guitronich to address the kidney issue. Then followed a 4-hour operation by Neurologist Dr Saeed Kohan to excise the remaining teratoma.
The very good news is that, after 9 months of treatment at The Canberra Hospital and Sydney Children's Hospital, Melenaite has been cleared to return home to her family in Tonga in time for Easter.
When the Rotary world arrives in Australia for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, between 27-31 May, our vibrant country will be in the spotlight. This is a rare chance to be an ambassador for Rotary in Australia and for the warm, welcoming host city of Melbourne, so register today!
