President's Message
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2024 and wishing you all a year full of success and good health.
Our club is looking forward to our first get-together on Wednesday night 24 January, where will meet casually and outline a couple of the things planned for 2024.
Our most exciting event scheduled for the first half of the year is a community dog day event, which we are planning in conjunction with Rotary Maroubra, to be held at Maroubra Beach.
In February our club will host our DG, Tonia Barnes. We will be inviting all the Rotary Clubs from the Eastern Suburbs to join with us on this night.
We look forward to working with Liz, in her new role at Sydney Airport, taking over from Georgia who we have worked with for several years.
We are very grateful for the long established relationship with the Airport Corporation, allowing both our Club and Marrickville Rotary to collect foreign coins and notes from the bins and enabling us to better serve our community.
Looking forward to welcoming all members and any guests and visitors to our meeting on Wednesday night. Please bring any ideas or suggestions you would like to share and incorporate into our 2024 year.
This meeting will be an informal get-together over a chat and convivial dinner.
There will be no guest speaker. It will be a chance to catch up after the rigours of the holiday season.
We will also have the opportunity to talk about some of the activities planned for the coming year.
All welcome, especially if you are a visitor.
Our last meeting
Our last meeting was a wonderful Christmas Party held in conjunction with that of the Graphic Arts Club.
We were all too busy enjoying ourselves to take any photos, and a great night was had by all.
Santa was very kind, with a gift of a lovely bottle of bubbly compliments of the Graphic Arts Club.

Our members have been busy enjoying family and the holiday season, but still managed to ensure support for two of our key youth program initiatives ..
Michaella has been attending the National Youth Science Forum at the University of Queensland
Michael Lee has attended the 6-day Rotary Youth Leadership Award program, a personal development program for young adults 19 to 25 focusing on leadership, personal development, teamwork and community awareness,
Hopefully both Michaella and Michael will attend one of our future meetings and fill us in on their experiences.

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a10 day program designed to give senior High School students a broad understanding of the diverse study and career options available to them in STEM.
The Rotary Club of Botany Randwick is pleased to sponsor Michaella to attend this year's forum at the University of Queensland from 12 – 20 January 2024. There will be about 200 – 300 young people in the Year 11 or 12 of high schools who will graduate next year. Michaella attends Cerdon Catholic Girls School in Merrylands.
On Friday 8 December, a very successful event was held to thank those involved in the refurbishment of the Maroubra Mental Health Unit. Cheryl Wittingslow, Peer Support Worker and refurbishment coordinator, invited SESLHD Mental Health representatives, key sponsors and funding groups to be a part of the celebrations.
President of Botany Randwick Rotary Club, Christine Baramilis, Secretary Greg Lill, past member of Rotary Randwick, Alex Weiss, and Kim Millar, past relationship manager, Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation, plus representatives from the POW Hospital Mental Health facilities attended the unveiling of two plaques at the Maroubra Centre, Eastern Suburbs Mental Health.
The plaque in the reception is dedicated to Rotary and The Prince of Wales Foundation. Cheryl Wittingslow, spoke about Randwick Rotary’s important donation in 2020 which helped the Centre begin its upgrade. Rotary’s commitment assisted the Health Department to improve the original poor conditions of the building and the centre. Since then our club has assisted with the purchase of gym equipment.

The Conference is being held at the Novotel Hotel, Cliff Road, North Wollongong, a wonderful location overlooking North Beach. Watch the Conference Page for progressive updates on the program for the weekend.
There will be speakers covering topical subjects and important Rotary projects. So come and join us for a weekend of learning and fun. Catch up with friends and make new ones - meet fellow Rotarians who care about creating a better world. It's a great opportunity for members new and old to get together and hear more about Rotary and what we do in our district and across the world.
District Governor Tonia Barnes has secured five accommodation options to assist Rotarians wishing to attend her Rotary District 9675 Conference from Friday 8 March to Sunday 11 March 2024. But they will not last long and you must book soon if you want to secure one of these hotels.
The hotels are the Novotel Northbeach, where the Conference will be held, the Sage Hotel, the Adina Apartment Hotel, Wollongong, Hotel Totto which opened last year, and the Mantra Wollongong.
Important to note is the Rotary Room Block unsold rooms release date – this is the date the hotels will take back their rooms, and they will no longer be available to book under this agreement. – see details on Conference Page
The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the second object, which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster:
• High ethical standards in business and professions
• The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
• The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions:
• Talk about your profession in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’ occupations. • Use your skills and expertise to serve a community.
• Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your words and actions.
• Help young people achieve their career goals.
• Guide and encourage others in their professional development. By undertaking these activities, you bring vocational service to life.
Vocational service is the essence of Rotary and serves as the foundation from which we serve our communities around the world.
The Four Way Test
The Four-Way Test is a non-partisan, non-sectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
