President's Message
Welcome to this Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick Inc. Our club has been serving the local and international community since 1948.
This will be the last newsletter of my term as President, which has been since our merger in 2020. There have been many achievements over this period, and I am pleased that the Club is in a strong and "vibrant" position to move further forward under incoming President Simon.
During my leadership we have managed to build:-
A solid structure, stability and has laid a very strong foundation for our club
Our membership has increased
We have received recognition for the club on several occasions
In relation to the airport collection - we had to navigate from being a tri cub to bi club and refurbished the collection bins at the airport
A regular newsletter with a column showcasing our monthly donations
We have re-established closer relations with the Rotary Clubs of Maroubra and other eastern Sydney clubs
and through my efforts we have jointly funded projects with Maroubra and Marrickville
Very excitingly, we have now had our first local community event – a Dog Fun Day which I hope our club will continue in the future.
With our partner club, Marrickville, last year, the Airport charity collection bins raised over $95,000. This is an increase of over 40% from the previous year.
I also had the pleasure of welcoming many Rotarians who decided to transfer to our club.
We welcome everyone to come along to any of our meetings to join in the fellowship and to learn more about what we do.
The meeting will be our Changeover Dinner, with Christine handing over the Presidency of the Club to Simon.
The night will be an opportunity to reflect on the significant achievements of the Club since its merger, and to launch the 2024/25 year in great fashion.
Whilst there will be a few formalities, there will be plenty of time to have a chat over a drink or two, and to enjoy the culinary delights of our caterers.
RSVP is required by 7 July as we have to confirm final numbers with the Graphic Arts Club early Monday 8th.
Our last meeting
At our last meeting we had four Year 10 students attended, with their parents, and regale us with their experiences at the recent RYPEN weekend.
RYPEN, The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment, is for young people aged 14 to 16 years and caters for teenagers who have shown qualities and application in everyday life which deserve further development.
RYPEN uses the common bonds of learning, co-operation, and friendship to design activities which facilitate trust and self-esteem. RYPEN seeks to broaden each participant’s horizons culturally, socially, and academically, providing the inner foundations for a strong future.
Noah and Ella came from JJ Cahill Memorial High School and
Amelie and Eve from St Claire's College Waverley were our representatives and all highlighted the benefits that they obtained from what was a great weekend.
Deputy Principal of JJ Cahill, John Misfud, reinforced the benefits that flowed from the weekend, setting these students up for future leadership positions within the school.
Our thanks to our member Paul Woodward for driving these students to and from the camp.

On Saturday 22 June, 10 members of our Club were invited to join a very convivial dinner with about 30 Rotary Community Leaders from across Australia and New Zealand.
They were undergoing a weekend of training at the Stamford Hotel in Mascot and invited us along to their dinner at the Graphic Arts Club, a venue very familiar to us.

Rotary International President for 2024-25 Stephanie Urchick announced that the 2024-25 presidential theme is The Magic of Rotary and called on members to recognize and amplify the organization’s power to save lives.
“Don’t misunderstand me – we are not going to end polio or bring peace to the world by waving a wand and saying some funny words,” Urchick told incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly on 8 January. “It’s up to you. You create the magic with every project completed, every dollar donated, and every new member.”
Urchick, a member of the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania, USA, said she saw the magic of Rotary on display when she was helping install water filters in the Dominican Republic. Two boys were watching as dirty water entered the filter, then ran out clean at the other end.
“One of the boys grabbed my sleeve and said, ‘Show me the magic again,’” she said. “Obviously, the water filter wasn’t magic. We worked hard to transport those filters, install them, and work with community leaders in the area to maintain them. But those boys knew that easy access to clean water would change their lives. Knowing that I played a small part in that certainly changed my life.”
